Beginning long before birth and continuing until death, the bones undergo continuous changes in form and structure. During periods of active growth these changes tend to occur in an orderly sequence and with such uniformity as to make an accurate estimation of age possible. After full maturity, or more particularly after the age of 25, the changes are apt to be more variable, and estimates of age based upon them are only approximations. In the beginning, bone is formed in masses of soft tissue, and the time, the sequence and the sites in which bone is first laid down are reasonably constant phenomena.
