Structured Physical Education Opportunities Any physical education program that provides opportunities for students to play cooperative games, allows them to develop skills through drills or repetition, utilizes lead-up games and sports, and supports rhythm and dance, as well as lifetime recreational activities and fitness training, will be appropriate for including students with autism.

In my school system, general students are not allowed to push other students in wheelchairs. I think this is important as a general rule, but I recognize that when general students are allowed to push the student in the wheelchair in the hallway as people are moving about the building to change classes or to go to lunch, this allows time for students to interact and get to know each other. My suggestion is that if this is allowed, the paraeducator or teacher should be within close proximity in case a problem arises.

This routine provides expectations for the student, which in turn relieves stress. All strategies will not work for every student, and most strategies are used in conjunction with others. So, be prepared to try different approaches to reach different students with autism, and try different strategies should one fail for a particular student. Emphasize Social Interaction Refining social skills of students with autism should be a primary and ongoing goal. Use peer facilitators as often as possible.
