Instead, disease was sweeping through the French fleet, and Villeneuve landed over 1,000 invalids. On hearing that Nelson was in pursuit he decided he couldn’t linger and wait for the Brest fleet. After collecting two more third rates in the West Indies, Villeneuve headed back out into the Atlantic, bound for northern Spain. Nelson had only limited information at his disposal, not all of which was accurate. Nevertheless he divined Villeneuve’s intentions, and took the great gamble to follow him into the Atlantic.
In a letter to Emma, Nelson wrote, ‘When I came to explain to them “the Nelson touch” it was like an electric shock. ’ These captains, most of whom had never served with Nelson before, were encouraged to use their initiative, to be bold and aggressive, and to seek nothing less than the complete destruction of the enemy. He followed these dinners up with a written memorandum, issued on 9 October, which underlined this approach and outlined his plan to cut the enemy fleet into three sections, and destroy two of them.
Nelson was stripped of his clothes and covered with a sheet. As the surgeon examined him Nelson accurately described his symptoms, including the regular pulsing of blood from his lung. It was clear the wound was fatal. As he lay dying, Nelson called for Hardy to give him an update on the course of the battle. 30pm Hardy appeared, and Nelson asked him how things went. Hardy replied; ‘Very well, my Lord. We have got 12 or 14 of the HMS Victory breaks through the Allied line at the battle of Trafalgar, October 1805 Vice-Admiral Nelson had already worked out his battle plan long before he sighted the Allied fleet off Cape Trafalgar on the morning of 21 October.
