Cuvier’s early work on the mammoth and mastodon had been followed by decades of disagreement among palaeontologists about the number of fossil elephant species. Some, like Richard Owen, still believed that all Tertiary elephants of the northern hemisphere could be incorporated within Cuvier’s single species: the ‘mammoth’; others divided his mammoth into as many as ten species.
