Contemporary patronage parties are more opportunistic and particularistic, partly because they lose their large loyal constituencies, and partly because they fall victim to factional divisions. As a result, ‘independents’ proliferate and factional fragmentation interferes with candidate selection by injecting strong doses of factional nepotism. Moreover, due to the increasing effect of the mass media on political campaigning and electoral competition, political selection and contest are increasingly ‘personalised’ and vulnerable to celebrity cults.
