The daguerreotype thus authenticated a French past and discredited the British present. However, the souvenir, as Stewart has also observed, is by definition always incomplete; the object is metonymic to the scene of its original appropriation and it must be supplemented by a narrative ‘that both attaches it to its origins and creates a myth with regard to those origins’ (Stewart 1984:136).
