Among the largest of volcanoes are shield volcanoes, gentle-sided, massive accumulations of fluid basaltic lava, such as those of the Hawai’ian Islands, resembling a gigantic warrior’s shield emerging from the sea. Composite cones or stratovolcanoes are equally huge, steep-sided accumulations of interspersed lava flows and pyroclastics that pile up into a major mountain form. Volcanic eruptions provide spectacular evidence of their ongoing construction. In some cases they can develop with incredible speed.
In general, shallow-focus earthquakes pose the greatest danger because they are the most numerous and closest to where people live. Other earthquake areas are the deep-sea trenches and volcanic island arcs (Fig. 9). The foci of earthquakes occurring in these regions may be shallow, intermediate, or as deep as 700 km (440 mi), depending upon their exact location in the subduction zone (Strahler 1998; Lliboutry 1999). Independent tracing of the different depths of earthquake foci in these areas by geophysicists in the mid-20th century finally allowed the naming of the downward-slanting seismic features, known as Wadati– Benioff zones, that define where a descending subduction slab is grinding beneath the upper plate (Wadati 1935; Benioff 1949, 1954; Oliver and Isaacs 1967).
