The team is competent and the task is highly structured. A directive leader might be perceived as micromanaging and taking up time with unnecessary activities. It should be noted that contingency models were developed before the widespread use of virtual teams. Although the kinds of situations described can certainly exist with virtual teams, most virtual teams have additional characteristics not envisioned by the proponents of contingency models and there is little research to help understand how these models might work with virtual, global teams.
But the consensus on charismatic leadership is that it’s a mixed bag. Although such leaders can attract incredibly devoted followers, they also tend to be divisive and can even be destructive, as the history of the twentieth century has shown us with leaders such as Hitler and Mao. Charismatic leaders depend on a strong emotional connection with their followers, which in virtual organizations can be difficult to create and sustain over time. It’s not clear whether charismatic leadership is possible or even relevant in the virtual enterprise.
