He saw that young people wanted music which they could take with them. The idea of the Sony Walkman was born in his head, and a few billion dollars later the problem had become a landmark success. The leaders interviewed also had the same positive outlook on more or less everything. They even viewed conflict as being positive – it is a way of sorting out priorities within the organisation, and it is a way of learning more about yourself and the other person. There are some consistent ways in which the emerging leader can demonstrate a positive outlook: ● Bring solutions and opportunities to the table, not problems.
We will look in more detail at what these words really mean in later chapters. To make the research interviews more interesting, the leaders were asked if there were any fatal mistakes that emerging leaders could make. Reassuringly, most leaders appeared to be reasonably forgiving and tolerant. They accepted that emerging talent makes mistakes; they accepted that new talent would not change the world immediately and that they would find it difficult adjusting to a new world of work. They all identified one unforgivable sin: disloyalty.
To become an expert at it takes years, which rather defeats the object of the exercise. The goal is to become a leader, not a psychological expert. You can be: ● Extrovert or Introvert (E or I). ● Sensing or Intuitive (S or N). ● Thinking or Feeling (T or F). ● Judging or Perceiving (J or P).
