Teeth and Food One of the main functions of teeth is to start the digestion of food. Food varies a great deal in texture, from mashed potatoes to rock candy. Teeth chop, tear, and grind a variety of materials to allow the digestive fluids to access the greater surface area that is inherent in smaller pieces of food.
