The plan backfired when De Soto’s army breached the palisade with steel axes and set fire to the houses inside, killing as many as 3,000 Indians. Throughout the expedition, De Soto took hundreds of native people captive, forcing them to serve as burden-bearers and sex slaves. When seeking information, he sometimes tortured these captives. By 1543, native people forced what remained of De Soto’s starving army into the Gulf of Mexico, but EuroAmerican patterns of violence—warfare, slavery, rape, and occasional torture—would endure.
In the mid-20th century, however, neighboring Lumbees routed the Ku Klux Klan, which had rallied to protest a relationship between Indian and white. Although whites considered most Indian-white sexual relationships taboo, white men did not hesitate to sexually exploit Indian women. In the 1930s missionaries among the Poarch Creeks in Alabama worried about white men preying on Indian schoolgirls, and government officials protested the sexual abuse of Seminole girls in the tourist camps of south Florida.
Southern studies scholars have soundly critiqued the notion of a “savage ideal” as being more characteristic of an imagined South than the complex and varied lives of individuals in the region. Moreover, as animal rights organizations have gained acceptance, blood sports have become increasingly controversial as activists dispute the classification of such practices as “sport” and decry them as exploitative of animals. Indeed, legislation prohibiting these practices and increasing penalties is proliferating across the United States; during the writing of this essay, cockfighting was criminalized in New Mexico and Louisiana, its last two strongholds.
