C. ‘Paddy’ Phillips, often billed as ‘The Original Tipperary Cuckoo’. At the end of November Will was given a reward for his efforts in the form of a benefit evening. 18 A short time later the Lenos sailed to Ireland to appear in another pantomime. 19 Charles Dickens was presenting a series of readings from his novels when he encountered the Lenos in Belfast in January 1869. Always an astute judge of theatrical talent, the great writer congratulated Dan after seeing him perform. ’20 Dickens died within the year, but his approval was to have a lasting effect on Dan’s self-esteem and, possibly, on the development of his comedy.
24 A year later she received favourable reviews for another ‘male’ role, Little John, in the pantomime Robin Hood at the People’s Opera House, Stockport. Dan was 23 and Lydia 16 when they first met at King Ohmy’s Circus of Varieties, Rochdale, in 1883. By the end of the 1870s Dan’s rapidly improving skills as an entertainer resulted in the Lenos re-establishing themselves as a popular music-hall act. A fellow performer, Bradley Truman, recalled Dan’s progress: I first met Leno at the People’s Music Hall in Oldham in 1876. At that time he was simply assisting his step-father and mother in a triple turn. His step-father was an old pantomimist whom I knew very well.
