I’d known people who worked as personal assistants to the stars and knew the role could require round-the-clock attention. That wasn’t the case with the Coens. They didn’t call me at home in the middle of the night to complain about aches and pains, real or imagined. In fact, they never called me at home. They arrived at the office around 9 each morning and they left at 5. During my first week with them, I spilled a garbage can in Margo’s room, the floor littered with paper cut-outs from the hole puncher.
The scene with Walter and the Dude in the coffee shop was also shot; they filmed Woo peeing on the Dude’s rug, and Treehorn’s thugs shoving the Dude’s head in the toilet. My first day back they shot the scene with the Nihilists and their marmot (a hand-puppet was used for the close-up shots of the marmot in the bathtub). * * * After the scenes in the Dude’s bungalow were complete, the company moved to nights for the next three weeks. When I finished in the cutting room on Thursday, February 20th, I drove to the bowling alley.
