Good afternoon, Mr. ” The door closed and he was gone. Good old Barton. I took her photo out of my wallet and sat there looking at it. You bitch, I thought, you bitch. I got up and locked the door, then took the phone off the hook. I sat behind my desk looking at the photo. You bitch, I thought, I’ll nail your ass! Against the wall! No mercy for you! I’ll catch you in the act! I’ll catch you at it! You whore, you bitch, you whore! I began breathing heavily. I unzipped. Then the earthquake hit. I dropped the photo and ducked under the desk.

I hadn’t been able to drink myself to sleep. I had just sat there, pouring them down. No luck. And now, like I said, it was the next morning, back at the office. I felt totally useless. I was useless. There were billions of women out there and not one of them was making her way toward my door. Why? I was a loser. I was a dick who couldn’t solve anything. I watched the fly crawling across my desk and I got ready to take it into the darkness. Then there was a flash of light! I leaped up. Celine was selling Cindy insurance!

I was in my car fast. I dug out from the curb, went a block, took a right and went down a back street. Then I slowed down and drove along. I heard a siren then. I lit a cigarette from the dash, turned the radio on. I got some rap music. I couldn’t understand what the guy was rapping about. I didn’t know whether to go back to my place or the office. I ended up in a supermarket pushing along a cart. I got 5 grapefruit, a roasted chicken and some potato salad. A fifth of vodka and some toilet paper.
