" HANS SELYE Stress has been defined in many ways by many different people. It has been a topic of interest to medical professionals, social scientists, anthropologists, psychologists, and even zoologists.
They are all automatic biochemical reactions within the body. They exist in order to warn and prepare the body to fight, flee, or freeze in a danger situation. We share this stress reaction with other animals. If you have a dog or cat, you can observe a similar response when it sees, smells, or hears something unfamiliar. The alarm reaction prepares us for the second stage: resistance. The result of the alarm reaction is that we now have an above-normal level of energy with which to resist the threat or adapt to the change and try to return to our normal state.
We have looked at the nature and origin of stress and acknowledge that stress is inevitable in all of our lives. We need stress to live and thrive. We know that it comes from both life-shattering events and everyday challenges. Different people react differently to stressful situations; perception is the determining factor in the extent to which any one stressor affects a particular individual.
