Geological Survey. General studies of streams, watersheds, irrigable lands, and potential dam and reservoir sites had been completed for much of the West. The Reclamation Service supplemented this information with more intensive surveys of the most promising irrigation projects, and began to prepare plans and specifications for construction. Although most of Quechan land near the ColoradoGila confluence came to be occupied by non-Indians, and the Quechans’ numbers declined significantly after their defeat, their strength and determination to overcome adversity have allowed them to survive as a tribe into the present. In 1865, the Fort Mohave Indian Reservation, comprising 75,000 acres near present-day Needles, and the Colorado River Indian Reservation, encompassing nearly 240,000 acres upriver from present-day Blythe, were set aside for several Colorado River tribes who would go there to live, but both were located far beyond the Quechans’ traditional homeland at the Colorado-Gila confluence; hence, the Quechans refused to move to these reservations.

Important from the standpoint of Indian agriculture was the moisture that seeped into the soil and the replenishment of soil fertility as a result of the overflow. The volume of silt carried by the Colorado River is enormous, and the continuous use of the floodplain lands without exhausting their fertility was made possible because of the fertilizing elements deposited by the annual overflow. Each year in the spring prior to the overflow, small plots subject to flooding were selected for cultivation and cleared with axes and knives.
