Cultural frameworks, values, habituated patterns of action, and informal rules thus may lag behind the instrumental, self-interested acts of agency that help create and reshape them. It takes time to rework a Giddensian structure. Thus, habitus does not respond automatically or mechanically to changes in individual preferences or interests. Rather, habitus and institutional infrastructure have an enmeshing effect, holding their adherents to the comprehensive, holistic precepts of a structurally sticky moral framework that may violate an individual’s immediate, concrete, utility-maximizing interests and may contradict formal rules.
At the same time, the oral historical process of producing narrative, memory, and authoritative information is itself a living process fraught with contestation and political struggle. This chapter provides a review of what is known about Serer history, as well as cultural and institutional change in this region, so we can make sense of the processes of contestation examined in the following chapter and grasp the narratives, allusions, imagery, and characters evoked when we explore specific processes of institutional syncretism in chapters 4 through 6.
