The blues are your symptoms of a mental cold. Listen to them or pay the price. And if you think you're the only one who gets the symptoms, you can sigh with relief when you hear this: Everybody gets the blues sometimes, just like everybody catches a cold. We may not get them every day and not in every way, but feeling blue is a normal part of living. If somebody tells you they don't ever get the blues, check their pulse to see if they're alive. People who have the blues can still function, although usually not as well as they would like.

In this chapter we give you an overview of the different types of blues so you can more easily decide where you are most likely to have trouble. These are the everyday blues, the ones all of us get at some point in our lives, We'll look at why we get them and what we could do to overcome these negative feelings that keep us from leading a more fulfilling life. The most important thing to remember from this point forward is this: Your blues are normal, and if you'll use the action strategies we describe in this book, your blues will be a source of power to change, inspire wisdom, and create deeper connections to others.

Our bosses chewed us out for losing an account, the guys we date don't call us back, our wives are knocking us for not communicating, we feel guilty planting our kids in front of the TV to watch endless Barney reruns, our lives are boring, or we're just overwhelmed by life's demands. But feeling bad can be healthy and serve a good purpose if we take the bad feelings as a sign that something is wrong and we need to fix it to be happy. If our bad feelings continue to grow, however, if they grip us and won't let go, if our thoughts often flow page_15 Page 16 from blue to black, then we're headed for something far worse than the everyday blues: a clinical depression, also known as the Big Bad Blues.
