When a company decides it wants to increase support to employees by providing outside access to the Internet, employees do not modify the way they are currently working. Employees who attempt to access outside information in a closed environment will receive a message that the outside site is not available. Once an employee has outside access the message is no longer displayed and the employee can access the site. This also applies to e-mail. An employee in a closed environment attempting to send e-mail to someone outside of the environment will receive a message that the system cannot access that e-mail address.

When a customer calls to see if a product is in stock, the employee answering the phone clicks on the inventory icon in the browser, a page opens up on-screen, and the employee enters the name of the product in the space on the page.
