In the case of every magnate with lands in Warwickshire, the king as duke of Lancaster included, their Warwickshire properties were part of an estate whose focal point lay elsewhere. This was even true of the earls of Warwick; although Warwick was their caput honoris, the Beauchamps had originally come from Elmley in Worcestershire. At the time of Richard Beauchamp's accession in 1401 the estate lay along a WarwickshireWorcestershire axis, roughly divided between the two but situated predominantly to the west of Warwick, with a small but significant body of lands on the north-west Warwickshire/south-west Staffordshire border and some outlying properties in midland counties to the south and east, as well as some further afield.
The present study is divided into two halves. The first concentrates on long-term structures and aims essentially to depict the nature and concerns of the gentry. It concludes with a summarising chapter on family and lineage. A major theme in this section is the question of who the gentry were; in particular, it draws comparisons between the nobility at one end of the social hierarchy and the admissibility of the very minor gentry to a study of political society at the other. To avoid pre-empting the second question - of whether the minor gentry are part of the landed elite - the analysis of social structures is based on a complete tenurial survey of the county.
