But many of them are so patently fake or grossly overdone that they only contribute to greater suspicion. One high sounding justification of foreign investment is interdependence. In fact, they were the biggest financiers of Japan's outward movement. This includes both the commercial banks and the state-run banks and financial agencies. Just as most Japanese companies are built on debt and not equity, their overseas ventures are also solidly embedded in loans. Actually, over the years, the share of debt acquisition has been catching up with securities acquisition and now represents nearly half the total value of direct foreign investment.

Given the intimate relations with their clients, they were easily convinced to establish branches abroad and this, in tum, encouraged other Japanese companies to come. To handle the growing trade, there were also shipping, forwarding and insurance firms. Tourism brought the airlines, hotels and travel agencies. Even some of the leading retail chains set up shop. However, it was hardly expected that smaller manufacturers would also enter upon the course of foreign investment. Most multinationals are, almost by definition, large, well-endowed companies with very distinctive products or highly advanced technologies.
