Two normal questions stood firstly of this PhD-thesis, particularly: • What are the mechanisms which bring about the emergence and institution of latest applied sciences? • How can this strategy of technological switch be prompted politically? during this experience, conceptual and theoretical pursuits have been the early using forces of the study paintings. this is often additionally mirrored within the substantial consciousness paid to the character of technological swap and political keep an eye on. the result's an holistic in keeping with spective which builds on inputs from varied disciplines and goals at dynamic interpretation. This, even though, created a serious methodological challenge: How may possibly the sort of accomplished viewpoint be used constructively? To enhance this hyperlink among thought and forward-looking, policy-oriented research, and to plan a strategy which confirmed explicitly how this technique will be utilized in a con structive approach have been in truth the foremost demanding situations of this examine venture. The appli cation to the instance of mixed warmth and tool iteration, and the comparability of the advancements within the united kingdom and in Germany serve the aim to illustrate how this technique and technique might be carried out in perform. those as pects have been additionally of specific curiosity to the Institute for potential Technological stories (IPTS), one ofthe institutes of the eu Commission's Joint study Centre, the place lots of the examine paintings pronounced during this PhD-thesis used to be carried out.

Example text
Starting from this theoretical contribution, a basic methodology for studies of innovation diffusion and political control will be presented ,which provides the main steps for the rest of the study (Chapter 4). Both the methodology and the underlying theoretical approach are expected to be sufficiently general to find application to other examples of technological change and public policy. The second part will include an introduction to the problem area of energy and electricity supply and to the technical issues involved in cogeneration technology (Chapter 5).
Growth and substitution models differ in that the latter are just a normalised form of the former for competition between two species. In a growth model the environment is not just given by the one competitor like in a substitution model, and the upper growth limit needs to be defined. Three parameters are required in growth models: The upper growth limit or saturation level, the time when the curve reaches its point of inflection, and a characteristic growth time in relation to the saturation level (for example from 10 - 90% of saturation).
Analytically, it can be characterised by at least two dimensions: 15 • Artefact dimension: technologies are composed of physical hardware, • Knowledge dimension: in order to make a technology work, different forms of knowledge are needed, both for its production and operation. 15 In English and German, the meanings of apparently similar terms differ. While the German Technik mainly refers to the hardware dimension of realised artefacts, and Technologie is understood as the knowledge or science of realising such artefacts, the British notions of technology and technique/technical are different.
