To be more precise, though, Foucault (1980) describes the apparatus as the ‘network’ between these discursive and non-discursive elements. We can take the term ‘network’ to be equivalent to the term ‘system of correlation’ used in the lectures series (Foucault 2007: 8). Whilst perhaps giving too strong a sense of a system of nodes and lines, the term ‘network’ is best thought of as a characteristic relation or set of relations through which the differential elements that make up an apparatus come together and may be held together.
Third, to the heterogeneous elements and relation(s) between those elements that comprise the apparatus. Fourth, to the constant process of strategic (re)elaboration that happens as intended and unintended effects are generated, come into relation with one another, and lead to (re)deployments or intensifications. These are only general methodological starting points. What they offer – or, perhaps better, promise – is a first step in thinking what I described in Chapter 1 as the mediation and the organisation of affective life.
Let us return to the example of ScentAir, and avoid reducing it to an example of a set of political-economic transformations that govern through molecular life. In order to shape a site’s atmosphere, affective life is housed in two referents connected by the olfactory system – environments and the neurological body. Specific forms of knowledge are used to know affective life (neuroscience) and varied techniques are deployed to intervene in environments and bodies: branding strategies that give a quality to products, sites or people and the introduction of scent as a new atmospheric materiality that (re)shapes the affective background.
