Downe, 1991, p. 3) Downe ( 1991) emphasises the need to make beliefs about midwifery practice explicit. One way to do this is to consider the types of knowledge that combine to make up the philosophy that the midwife might hold of midwifery care. Carper (1992) (in an article originally published in 1978) describes four types of knowledge which underpin the practice of nursing: empirics, nursing science; aesthetics, the art of nursing; personal knowledge; and ethics, the moral component. Nursing science is described as the knowledge and theories about nursing which explain and inform nursing care.

Robinson (1992) has described the pain and effort involved in the mental process of concept development and this same effort has been required in the process of determining the meaning of different terms used by different authors when discussing theory development.

The information collected is then analysed and concepts in the data are identified and relationships between these concepts suggested.
