Downe, 1991, p. 3) Downe ( 1991) emphasises the need to make beliefs about midwifery practice explicit. One way to do this is to consider the types of knowledge that combine to make up the philosophy that the midwife might hold of midwifery care. Carper (1992) (in an article originally published in 1978) describes four types of knowledge which underpin the practice of nursing: empirics, nursing science; aesthetics, the art of nursing; personal knowledge; and ethics, the moral component. Nursing science is described as the knowledge and theories about nursing which explain and inform nursing care.
14 Theory for midwifery practice refers to the personal model of practice held by the individual midwife as a 'conceptual model' while also referring to extremely abstract representations which: 'cannot be tested, or observed' (Carveth, 1987, p. 22) as conceptual models.
