Why did you choose to act against your personal value and ideal practice? Negotiating interprofessional boundaries Healthcare professionals in organizations such as hospitals, clinics and professional rooms need to work together as part of an interdisciplinary health team. To do this well, there needs to be a well developed sense of respect between practitioners for the work they do with clients. This respect assumes a sound level of knowledge about the other professionals’ roles and responsibilities and how to work together at interprofessional boundaries.
The way a midwife behaves in a birthing room may be different from the way they behave when receiving a baby from a Caesarean section. A physiotherapist may act in a certain way in a rehabilitative unit and another way in an intensive care setting. The point is that the social setting in some way determines the way we act and how we relate to other people within that setting. Healthcare professionals may be most comfortable interacting within their own practice groups. The reasons are not difficult to speculate – individuals belonging to the same group are aware of the social conventions that govern their behaviour and they can embody them well and with relative ease.
