While a handful continued trading tapes and meeting up at the Consumer Electronics Show every year, the practices of the growing number of VCR owners veered away from the tape-trading classifieds at the back of magazines like The Videophile and toward the next frontier, prerecorded cassettes. 2 “Hollywood in a Box”: Reconstructing Videotapes as Transparent Media In the early 1980s, an apocryphal story made the rounds among video storeowners concerning a hapless customer who brought his VCR back to the store where he’d purchased it a year earlier, complaining that it had stopped working.

In 1972, Cartridge Television, Inc. announced its Cartrivision videocassette recorder, which played half-inch magnetic tape off of reels stacked one on top of another in square cartridges. Due to a novel technical design, a Cartrivision cartridge could hold up to two hours of video, and the machines, produced by Avco, had the same basic functionality as the later Sony and Matshushita standards. The real selling point of Cartrivision, however, was the integrated sale of both medium and message; the machine would be marketed hand in hand with prerecorded tapes of mainstream Hollywood movies and other content.

The no-rewind functionality of the red cassettes proved an irritation to consumers.
