Desmond Tutu had always been an optimist. Throughout his life, he had overcome many difficulties, ranging from poverty to tuberculosis. He sought to bring the spirit of hope to a younger generation of black South Africans, but he found that many were increasingly bitter and thought violence was a proper response to the policies of apartheid.
The leader of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov, was almost completely unknown. For more than a decade previously, there Archbishop of Johannesburg had been the stable, though repressive, government of Leonid Brezhnev. Now there was great concern about what might happen between Russia and the United States. American President Ronald Reagan had called the Soviet Union an “evil empire,” further poisoning relations between the two countries. In the midst of all this, South Africa was about to explode.
