Of course we all know that there is nothing inherent in the sound of the word ‘dog’ that makes it a singularly appropriate label for the animal, and we only have to observe the fact that other languages use different words for ‘dog’ or ‘pig’ to be satisfied that the words we use to refer to concepts are just a convention—any word would do as long as everyone uses the same one.
