Freshwater swabs! Bashi-bazouks! Cannibals! Caterpillars! Captain Haddock would never say some of the lines they give him here. The actual characters do enter the realm of uncanny valley at times too. Almost seem real and almost don't seem real. I find some of these CG films slightly creepy at times to be honest and while this film doesn't completely avoid this I had far less trouble here than I usually do. Now and again, when they linger in frame though, characters just seem somewhat dead and we suddenly are aware they are fake and hollow.
Other Films * The Crab with the Golden Claws (1947) – The first successful attempt to adapt one of the comics into a feature film. Written and directed by Claude Misonne and João B Michiels, the film was a black-and-white stop-motion puppet production created by a small Belgian studio. * Tintin and the Golden Fleece (1961) – A French live action film was released, adapted not from one of Hergé's Adventures of Tintin but instead from an original script written by André Barret and Rémo Forlani. Directed by Jean-Jacques Vierne and starring Jean-Pierre Talbot as Tintin and Georges Wilson as Haddock, the plot revolves around the protagonists travelling to Istanbul in Turkey to collect the Golden Fleece, a ship left to Haddock in the will of his friend, Themistocle Paparanic.
The Captain invites them to stay on the grounds of his large estate. On his return back home, he learns that his dreaded Bianca Castafiore, famous and eccentric opera singer, will be coming to stay for a few days. In his rush to run off to Italy and hence avoid meeting the somewhat irritating singer, Captain Haddock trips over the stairs and ends up in a wheelchair. Now he has to endure Castafiore while he's trapped in a wheelchair, and reporters are making stories up about a romantic affair between the Captain and the singer.
